Gazebo commemorates the Second World War at Bilston Town Hall

Throughout 2010, Gazebo will be commemorating the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, with an exciting programme of events, performances and exhibitions at Bilston Town Hall.

The programme began in January with reminiscence sessions and a series of arts workshops with pupils at St Martin's C of E Primary School and Bilston Academy.  The work produced by years 5, 6 and 7 pupils has been on display in the Town Hall Foyer, and year 5 pupils performed their own specially created drama for parents, carers, teachers and local councillors.  Everybody was very impressed with the high quality and professionalism of the young participants.

Gazebo will be undertaking further activities with more schools throughout the year, and the work produced will be utilised within their site specific production "Echoes" due to be staged towards the end of 2010.

On Saturday 8th May, we bring VE Day back to life once more with an Anniversary Celebration for the whole community, featuring Paul Drakeley and His All Star Swing Band.  Tickets for this event are on sale now at just £5 (or £6 on the door) from Bilston Town Hall, 01902 497222.  The event runs from 6pm until midnight and young people should be accompanied by an adult.  An event is also being planned for VJ Day on 15th August.

We are working in partnership with a number of organisations for this programme including Black Country Memories Club, United Ex Service Council, Wolverhampton City Council, Wolverhampton Local Archivess, Wolverhampton Black History Archives and Local Neighbourhood Areas.  If you are interested in getting involved,  and particularly if you would like to share your own or relatives' memories and memorabilia we would love to hear from you.

Gazebo Wins Joint Jaguar Award

The 'Safe Night Out' project, a collaboration between Oceana Night Club, Gazebo Theatre and Deansfield High School has won the 'Marketing Birmingham Youth Award' at the recent Jaguar Awards Ceremony held at Birmingham Town Hall.

The prestigious award was presented to representatives of the collaborative team by actress Sheila Hancock and ITV arts reporter Nina Nannar, in an awards ceremony that celebrates the best partnerships between business and the arts.

Pamela Cole-Hudson, Gazebo's Strategic Director represented the company at the event:

"We were delighted to be presented with this award for the 'Safe Night Out' project, which has been a very exciting creative partnership for all those involved.

The project involved the delivery of a series of 'Safe Night Out' workshops within the 'real life' setting of Oceana Nightclub. Pupils visited the club and saw and discussed scenarios including a woman's drink being spiked, an accidental stabbing and women taking drugs in the toilets, all performed by local, professional actors and facilitated by local agencies. These led up to the official taking over of the club by pupils from eight schools, in a fantastic night of live music and a dance off!

The event involved more than 1000 pupils and a number of Midlands based professional arts practitioners and companies."

Gazebo Theatre would also like to extend their congratulations to the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre who won an award for 'W' Factor, a drama project for young people based on the work of the children's laureate, Jacqueline  Wilson developed in conjunction with Gazebo.
