 SWEET TOOTH

'One moving, amazing show'

Photography by Nelson Douglas, Model: Alice Hudson

By the time of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 1807, at least 12 to 15 million African men, women and children had been loaded onto European slave ships - 3 ¼ million by the British.

This powerful and emotive play tells the story of the trade, and gives voice to the millions of women and girls who endured immeasurable cruelty in what can only be described as an African holocaust.  Sharing the stories of Mary Prince, Nanny of the Maroons in Jamaica, Sojourner Truth and the nameless many, this one-woman play, which has been developed in consultation with young people and international academics working in the field of slavery, merges video, live action and original music, to educate and provoke.
The video features a number of high profile figures including Dr Yvonne Thompson CBE, Angelina Osborne, Karl George MBE, Mr Derrick Anderson CBE, Dr Gemma Romain, Felicia Siebritz, 4Sure and Sylvester Williams.  Performing live, and playing a number of characters within the show is local actress, Alexia McIntosh, who has been described by audience members across the region as 'a stunning actress' who 'sung beautifully' and should be on X Factor!

Described as 'a truly amazing exposition of history' and 'an eye opener to the truth', this show is not to be missed.

Gazebo Theatre Company presents

 Rivers to Cross: The Legacy

written & directed by Pamela Cole-Hudson with Martin Glynn

The sequel to “Sweet Tooth” shares the legacies of the transatlantic slave trade, and traces remarkable achievements in the face of adversity.  Kicking off where “Sweet Tooth” left off, “Rivers to Cross” will take you on a 170 year multi-media journey, through Colonialism and Empire, segregation and the Civil Rights Movement, Windrush, the British race riots, Apartheid, the black consciousness movement and Pan-Africanism telling the true stories of great art and accomplishments.  Notions of race and identity will be explored in an examination of the black british male experience, and questions raised about how far a society which continues to label, misrepresent and marginalize, really has moved on over the last 200 years.  Featuring an original music score, fantastic acting, and eye opening scenes,  “Rivers to Cross” will take the audience on a roller coaster of emotions ; leaving them feeling better educated, informed and hopefully motivated to make some changes.
